Map data
Last updated November 4, 2026
Tropino draws its maps from open data. This page lists the sources, their licences and where to get the data the app uses.
The map
The map in the app and in videos comes from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. See https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright.
We use the Protomaps basemap built from it (version 4.15.2, the build of November 4, 2026), copied unchanged to our storage. It is available under the ODbL as a single file in the PMTiles format:
- our copy: https://tiles.tropino.app/basemap/planet.pmtiles
- the original build: https://build.protomaps.com/20261104.pmtiles
The file also contains land cover data that Tropino does not draw: © ESA WorldCover project 2020 / Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2020) processed by ESA WorldCover consortium, licensed under CC BY 4.0.
Lines along roads
Lines between points that follow roads, paths and railways are computed on your phone from road data built from OpenStreetMap with the open-source Valhalla tools. When we publish this data for every country, this page will say where to get it and how it was made.
In the app
- The Atlas map and the country outlines: Natural Earth, public domain.
- Place names for search: GeoNames, licensed under CC BY 4.0.
- The stars around the planet: the Bright Star Catalogue, 5th revised edition (Hoffleit and Warren), as NASA's HEASARC publishes it.
- The Milky Way: ESO's panorama of the sky, eso0932a, © ESO/S. Brunier, licensed under CC BY 4.0.
- The cities' lights at night: NASA Earth Observatory's Black Marble 2016.
The app's Settings → Data licences lists them all with their notices.
